Beatles' fans fight closureCampaigners battling to save Liverpool's Strawberry Field
children's home from closure have won international support.
Staff at the Woolton home, which became immortalised in
The Beatles' track Strawberry Fields Forever, called on the
public to back them earlier this week.
Now messages of support from outraged Beatles fans have
come the USA and New Zealand.
Since the Salvation Army announced plans to close the home,
fears have grown that the building and its world-famous gates
might be sold to a housing developer.
Fans from abroad have called on staff to put their 1,800-name
petition on the internet so they can create international
Penny Pearson, a lawyer from Colorado, said: "I went on a
Beatles pilgrimage to London, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Paris
- all the Fab Four's major haunts - and had the good fortune to
spend several days in Liverpool.
"Strawberry Field was one of the places I visited, but I don't
think you have to go there to appreciate the significance it
holds in Beatles history."
David Holmes, who runs US-based website Beatles Number
Nine, said: "I would like to help by starting an online petition for
American Beatles fans."
